Maria Sharapova Survives On Day Four Of Wimbledon 2012; Ana Ivanovic Advances

Maria Sharapova

If an opponent is going to defeat Maria Sharapova these days, they had better do it in straight sets. With a 21-1 record in 3 setters since the beginning of 2011, it doesn’t matter how shaky Masha’s play might be through the first 2 sets, she owns the third. Such was the case in her Wimbledon 2012 2nd round match against the dangerous (on grass) Tsvetana Pironkova; the player who bounced 5-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams out of the tournament in 2010 and 2011. Masha struggled to find her groove over the first two sets, which were played over two days due to darkness on day 3. But once Masha reached the 3rd set, it was over as she smoked Pironkova, closing her out with a bagel and advancing, 7-6 (3) 6-7 (3) 6-0.

Ana Ivanovic

I haven’t check in on one of my favorites the first few days, Ana Ivanovic. That’s mostly because I always get excited when she looks like the Ana of old in victory, only to be disappointed by a head-scratching loss. She moved through against Kateryna Bondarenko, but that’s not really a match to tell much. Ana has made it to a Wimbledon semifinal (2007), but that was back when she was playing very well. In the last handful of years she hasn’t made it past the 4th round. Like Sam Stosur, that surprises me. Big serve, big groundies. A game that should translate well to grass. It’s all mental with Ana. We’ll see if she can believe in her talent and makes a run this year.
