Alexis Thompson Formally Petitions LPGA For Access To More Sponsor Exemptions

Alexis Thompson at Curtis Cup

We knew this was coming so it’s no surprise.  Alexis Thompson has formally petitioned not for membership, but for access to more sponsor exemptions.  A non-member is currently allowed six sponsor exemptions, eight if she also qualifies for the US Women’s Open and the Women’s British Open.  Thompson is asking for twelve.  Her camp bases this significant increase in allowances to her solid play this year, earning over $300,000 in limited play, including a runner-up finish at the Evian Masters.  My personal opinion is to allow her the exemptions.  Her game is ready.  If the LPGA sets out some other guidelines involving school and a 24/7 parental presence in all LPGA associated events then that would be fine as well.  Give her the exemptions.  I think she has earned it.  But lay down some conditions, taking into account she is a 15 year old girl, which each time broken will result in the loss of one exemption.
