KLPGA: Hye Youn Kim Shoots A Final Round 68 To Charge To Victory At Hyundai China Ladies Open, So Yeon Ryu Fires A Final Round 66, But Falls One Shot Short Of Defending Her Title

Hye Youn Kim

On a final day when players at the top were able to shoot low scores, South Korea’s Hye Youn Kim reeled off five birdies against one bogey to shoot a final round 4-under 68, leaving her at 4-under overall for the tournament, good enough to claim victory in the opening event of the 2011 KLPGA season. Youn showed she meant business early, birdying the par-4 1st hole and the par-5 4th hole. She dropped a shot at the par-5 8th but immediately birdied the par-5 9th.

Ha Neul Kim

Tying for 2nd place were fan-favorites Ha Neul Kim and So Yeon Ryu. Ryu, the defending champion, gave it a herculean effort in the final round, tying for low round round of the day with Hyun Ji Kim at 6-under 66. However, that left Ryu at 3-under overall, one shot shy of a playoff to keep her hopes of defending her title alive. Ha Neul Kim’s round included four birdies against one bogey, including birdying four out of five holes, the 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th. She ended the day and the tournament at 3-under. First and second round leader Jung Min Lee survived a 75 on day two to maintain a slim one shot lead heading into the final round. She could not survive another poor round, a final round 4-over 76 that dropped her from 1st place all the way to a tie for 12th.

One last thing…I have to check with HappyFan from Seoul Sisters.com, but I think Mi Rim Li won a car! I’m not sure about the translation of the site I’m reading but she did have an ace on the 15th hole of the second round. Now they publish a picture of her leaning on a Hyundai (the tournament sponsor) making victory signs. I think she won the car, but I’ll have to double check with HF and his Korean translation skills.

Mi Rim Lee

UPDATE: A Seoul Sister forum member, sfokim, has confirmed that Mi Rim Lee did indeed win the car as a result of her ace on 15 in the second round!
