Jarmila Groth Stuns Top Seed Samantha Stosur In Straight Sets At Brisbane International

Jarmila Groth

Melburnian Jarmila Groth recorded the biggest upset of the young year, using a powerful serve to oust Australia’s top player, #1-seed Samantha Stosur from the Brisbane International 6-2 6-4. Stosur lost her first two service games and could find an answer for the Groth serve, falling victim to seven aces in the first set. Stosur fought back in the second set, breaking Groth and leading 4-1. It seemed the ship had been righted for Stosur, but Groth shocked everybody, except maybe herself, by winning the next five games of the match to end in stunning fashion. Samantha not only had no answer for Groth’s serve, but could not find the rhythm on her own serve, winning only 10 of 35 service points. Not to be outdone, Lucie Safarova took out second seed Shahar Peer in three sets. Definitely an upset, but compared to what happened to Samantha Stosur, and what was expected of Samantha Stosur, it almost seems like an afterthought. In men’s action, #1 seed Robin Soderling and #4 seed Mardy Fish had no problems advancing in straight sets.
