Andy Roddick Aces His Way Into Third Round At Brisbane; Andrea Petkovic Blows By Jelena Dokic; Mardy Fish Ousted

Andy Roddick

Defending Champion Andy Roddick of the United States withstood the challenge of Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov to win 6-4 6-1 and advance to the third round of the Brisbane International. The feisty Dolgopolov went for broke early in the match, actually trying to out-winner the big hitting Roddick. For six games Dolgopolov was actually doing so as Andy found himself down 2-4 in the opening set. But Roddick, like so many champions, took his game to another level, hitting another gear and winning 10 of the next 11 games to brush aside his Ukrainian challenger and set up a showdown with Marcos Baghdatis, who beat Lukasz Kubot of Poland 6-2 6-2. Roddick had 15 aces against Dolgopolov, bring his total to 20 for the tournament. The American is donating $100 for every ace hit in the tournament to flood relief in Australia.

Andrea Petkovic of Germany took out Australia’s Jelena Dokic, a wildcard recipient, 6-0 6-1 in easy fashion. Dokic claims to have had a stomach virus going into the match, which given how little she challenged Petkovic seems likely. Dokic loss made it three home country women falling in a short period of time, following Sally Peers’ ouster and the shocking upset of top seed Samantha Stosur. Petkovic now faces Stosur-slayer Jarmila Groth.

Mardy Fish

Fourth-seeded American Mardy Fish found himself with a mountain too high to climb as he was ousted by Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic is easy fashion 6-3 6-1 after a rain delay. Although this is technically an upset by seeding, Stepanek was a finalist in 2010 against Andy Roddick at Brisbane and plays well at Patrick Rafter arena. Fish was a bit unfortunate to draw the Czech star in a second round match.
