Caroline Wozniacki Reaches Semis At Dubai, Reclaims WTA #1 Ranking

To her credit, Caroline Wozniacki has been very impressive so far at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship, casting aside all challengers. With her 6-2 6-4 defeat of Shahar Peer in the quarterfinals, she has guaranteed a return to the #1 ranking on Monday when they are published. It is a great achievement and she should be congratulated. Caroline has done nothing wrong. My problem is the ranking system itself. Kim Clijsters has won the last three biggest events, the US Open, the WTA Tour Championships (Doha) and the Australian Open. Majors should count so much more than they do. No matter what the computer says, in my mind the real #1 is Kim Clijsters. But again, that’s not Caroline’s fault. She just plays and wins. And she’s a terrific player, one of my favorites.

Caroline should have an intriguing semifinal match as Jelena Jankovic and Samantha Stosur battle for the right to face the re-christened #1. Although I post a lot about Ana Ivanonic, whom I always root for, my favorite Serbian player is Jelena Jankovic. What I worry about against Stosur is that Jankovic can handle power players…sometimes. That is, I have seen her go toe to toe with Serena Williams, even in defeat. But I also saw a match against Samantha Stosur where she just couldn’t deal with the power. With Jelena, it just depends which Jelena shows up, the one ready to fight or the one who can be a little shaky. Agnieszka Radwanska faces Svetlana Kuznetsova in one quarterfinal on the other side of the draw while Alisa Kleybanova takes on Flavia Pennetta in the other. You can never tell in tennis, but I would predict a Radwanska-Kleybanova semi on that side with a Wozniacki-Stosur (I have to be honest, even though I love Jelena) on the other.
