Canada’s Rebecca Marino, A Rising WTA Star

Rebecca Marino

Rebecca Marino of Canada made the final of the 2011 Cellular South Cup, but unfortunately she had an abdominal injury that forced her to retire from her match against Magdalena Rybarikova. She reached a career high of ranking of #80 last week, which is sure to go up when rankings are published on February 21st. Although she was ousted in the second round of the 2011 Australian Open, it wasn’t without a fight against 2010 Francesca Schiavone. Everybody remembers the marathon match Schiavone played in a subsequent round against Svetlana Kuznetsova, but Marino was the first player to take Schiavone to the brink of defeat in a 6–3 5–7 9–7 battle. Who knows what might have happened if Rebecca had pulled out that match. At only 20 years old, the future seems bright for this rising Canadian star.
