Russia’s Vera Zvonareva stunned world #1 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, 6-4 6-4, in the final of the 2011 Qatar Ladies Open in Doha. Runner-up finishes in two Grand Slams last year, Wimbledon and the US Open, has increased the expectations for Zvonareva in 2011. She came into this match 3-4 against Wozniacki, having lost in her only two finals against Caroline, 2010 China Open and 2010 Rogers Cup. But Vera looked to even the score early, breaking Caroline in the first game of the match. However, the Dane broke back immediately to even things. Undeterred, Vera broke Caroline again in the third game to give her a one break lead she would ride to a first set win. The two also traded back to back breaks in the second set in games three and four, before Vera scored the match-deciding break in the seventh game.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling. I never expected the week to go like this when I started. I slowly built the momentum after the tough three-setters against Daniela (Hantuchova) and Jelena (Jankovic).”-Vera Zvonareva
And speaking of the Jankovic match, Vera certainly had Jelena squarely in her sights in that one.
The Hantuchova match was a great three setter.
