Caroline Wozniacki d. Jelena Jankovic, 6-4 6-4. That reads like a pretty routine scoreline, but what it leaves out are the details. Jelena had chance after chance to consolidate breaks in the first set and failed to do so. She was up a break 3 times in the first set, only to see Caroline break back. Jelena just couldn’t hold serve in the opening set, squandering those 3 breaks of Wozniacki’s serve and then getting broken on her own serve to lose the set. Some order was restored in the second set as both players found their service rhythm until Caroline finally ground Jelena down and broke her in the final game of the match.
Despite all of the service breaks in the first set, there was some high level tennis being played. Caroline really did a great job of making Jelena play her game. There were lots of extended rallies, although at times Caroline also turned on some aggression. But mostly, Caroline just wore Jelena down. The blueprint for beating Caroline is what Andrea Petkovic did at the Sony Ericsson Open, mix it up. You can’t just keep pounding hard groundies at her. She eats that up. If you give her that kind of attack, she will accept it and just keep returning the ball to you, waiting for your error.
“What she (Wozniacki) does best is she runs all these balls down and makes you play the extra ball that with other players would be a winner. It somehow comes back with her. She reads the ball very well. She anticipates and she’s at the ball every time. So you have to beat her because she’s not going to give you anything.”-Jelena Jankovic
Caroline will play Elena Vesnina in the final. Vesnina upset the defending champion, Samantha Stosur, in the third round. Beating Caroline will prove a far greater task. Wozniacki holds a 4-1 advantage, including two previous meetings on clay. However, in those two green clay losses, Vesnina failed to convert on 4 match points in the second set of the first loss and was up a set and a break at 6-1 5-3 before losing the second match. So maybe Vesnina can finish the job in this shot at Caroline.
