Jelena Jankovic will be looking to continue her march to her first title of the year in the semifinals of the Family Circle Cup. Just one problem, though. Standing in her way will be world #1 Caroline Wozniacki, looking to capture a crown on the green clay of South Carolina. Jankovic blew away Christina McHale of the USA 6-2 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Although the match was routine for Jankovic, she was gracious in victory.
“The score looked pretty easy today, but the match was a lot tougher. My opponent played really well. She has a great serve and a pretty big forehand. Maybe I was better on the important points, especially at the start of the match. I took two long games and from then on I had the momentum. But she plays very well and she’s going to be a very good player in the future.”-Jelena Jankovic
Having a far tougher time, and a far tougher opponent, in the quarterfinals was Caroline Wozniacki, who was pushed but won the critical points in a 4-6 6-4 6-4 battle with Belgian star Yanina Wickmayer. Wickmayer was up a break 1-3 in the second set and again at 2-4 in the third but could not finish Wozniacki. That is the sign of a champion, Caroline refusing to concede to a big, powerful player who was lacing winners off both sides.
Jankovic leads the head-to-head 4-1, but lost their last match in Dubai. However, she had chances to win that first set, but like Wickmayer, couldn’t finish Caroline. They also have never played a match on clay. I think if Jelena comes into the match (relatively) healthy, she has an excellent chance to pull the upset.
