Se Ri Pak Inspiring More Than Just Korean Golfers; Caroline Masson Leads After 2nd Round Of Ricoh Women’s British Open

Se Ri Pak

Se Ri Pak is the reason this blog exists. The World Golf Hall of Famer has often been credited as the inspiration behind a wave of Korean golfers who have had success on every golf tour that matters around the world. Nobody denies that, because it’s true. However, as I watched Se Ri tie a championship round record at Carnoustie in the 2011 Ricoh Women’s British Open second round with an 8-under 64, I couldn’t help but think of all the American Se Ri fans who care about the LPGA because of her. I’m one of them. Before Se Ri, I had a vague interest in the Annika vs Karrie tug of war. But after Se Ri won the 1998 U.S. Women’s Open and went on to dazzle on the course with her play and, as her English improved, charm off the course with her personality, I was hooked on golf. Specifically, I was hooked on LPGA golf. Soon after, more Koreans came on tour, including my favorite active player Grace Park. Another big Se Ri fan, maybe the biggest Se Ri fan of all, started the Seoul Sisters golf website, packed with information on just about every female Korean golfer of consequence. That same fan has gone on to start the Seoul Sisters web forum and Seoul Sisters blog. He is an American who is not of Korean heritage. I am not of Korean heritage. If you visit the Seoul Sisters web forum, you will find many similar Se Ri fans just like us. When I woke up to see Se Ri’s spectacular second round at Carnoustie, I felt like a 10 year old child waking up on Christmas morning and finding a puppy under the Christmas tree.

The tournament is far from over, and Se Ri trails leader Caroline Masson and 2nd place Inbee Park who also shot 64. Pak also has lots of company in 4th place. She’s a long way from winning. But the smile on my face has nothing to do with Se Ri being in position to make a run. Just seeing her play like she did in the second round makes me reminisce on her prime years. The farther away those years are, the dimmer the memories become in the collective golf consciousness. Se Ri made it into the Hall of Fame while playing at a time when Annika and Karrie were in their primes. Juli Inkster was also still having great success. Pak won 4 times as a rookie in 1998 including 2 Majors, 4 times in 1999, 5 times in 2001 including a Major, 5 times in 2002 including a Major and 3 times in 2003 while winning the Vare Trophy. That’s a run that in my opinion surpasses any current top 5 player. Yani Tseng is great, the youngest to win four Majors, and I am a big fan. But she has yet to have a 5 win season, much less two 5 win seasons and two 4 win seasons. Specifically, I mean a season with 5 LPGA wins, not 5 wins when counting global wins. And keep this in mind, there is no challenger who is a Hall of Fame lock on tour right now challenging Yani. Se Ri put those great seasons together with Annika, Karrie and Juli all having great seasons. In 2002, when Se Ri won 5 times, Annika won 11 times. Yani has no player like that with which to contend. Se Ri had 5 wins in 2001. Annika had 8. When Se Ri won 4 times in 1999, Karrie had 6 wins and Annika had 5. One might still think Yani is better than Se Ri in her prime. That’s fine. If she is, it’s not by much. One thing is for sure. Anybody who followed Se Ri during her best years knows that while we haven’t seen the version of Se Ri we saw in the second round lately, it was a great example for those who didn’t follow her to see what we did all those years.
