Maria Sharapova, Samantha Stosur Advance In 2nd Round Of 2011 US Open

Maria Sharapova

As quickly as Maria Sharapova advanced past Anastasiya Yakimova 6-1 6-1 in the second round of the 2011 US Open, it’s odd that the match actually started in August and ended in September. That’s the beauty of a night match on the final day of the eighth month. I have to give Yakimova some credit, though. Maria jumped out to a lead, but early on Anastasiya squandered several game points and, more importantly, break points. Masha will have to come out stronger as her competition gets tougher. She could easily have been down 3-0 or 4-0 in the first set instead of the opposite. If her opponent had been Serena Williams or Caroline Wozniacki…or even 3rd round opponent Flavia Pennetta…she probably would have been. That 6-1 score in the first set doesn’t tell the whole story. However, Masha moves on. At the end of the day, that’s what matters.

Samantha Stosur

One player who could be a factor, especially if the courts continue to play slowly into the second week is Samantha Stosur. There isn’t a lot of buzz about her. Maybe she needs a few more rounds under her belt to get people talking. If she can get into the second week, she could be a real threat. She is not afraid of Serena. Yes, Serena beat Samantha at Toronto on hardcourts but these courts at the Open are playing usually slowly. I’m not in any way suggesting the courts are as slow as clay, that’s way off. But if they stay slow, I like Samantha’s chances here. Remember that on a slow track at Roland Garros last year, Samantha took out Serena on her way to the final. In the second round here, Samantha dispatched American Coco Vandeweghe 6-3 6-4. Next up is the very dangerous and unpredictable Nadia Petrova. On paper, Samantha should win, but Nadia…sometimes she can be amazing…other times, amazingly awful. You just never know what Nadia will show up.
