Novak Djokovic, Caroline Wozniacki Destroy Overwhelmed Opponents In 2nd Round Of 2011 US Open

Novak Djokovic

World #1 Novak Djokovic was beating Carlos Berlocq so badly in his second round match that it took Berlocq until the third set to even get on the board. On his way to a 6-0 6-0 6-2 drubbing of his overmatched opponent, Nole jumped out 6-0 6-0 2-0 before Carlos broke Nole’s serve for his first game of the match, a won game that drew a standing ovation from the crowd. Carlos actually broke Nole two times in a row, but other than that it was an exercise in futility trying to cope with Djokovic. The top seed improved his 2011 record to 59-2, at times seemingly toying with Berlocq. Nole won his opening round match 6-0 5-1 retirement, when Conor Niland threw in the towel with illness. I’d feel ill as well if I had to face Djokovic. However, after two easy days at the office the tournament begins in earnest with the very dangerous Nicholay Davydenko awaiting Nole in the third round.

Caroline Wozniacki

Prior to the win by Djokovic, fellow world #1 and top seed Caroline Wozniacki started the night of beatdowns by taking out Arantxa Rus 6-2 6-0. It was vintage Wozniacki. She didn’t go for huge shots, as many are suggesting she should. Rather, she stuck to her modus operandi of running down every shot and keeping the ball in play until her opponent commits a mistake. Arantxa obliged with 32 unforced errors in only 14 games. Caroline came in a few times, but I wouldn’t characterize a few aggressive shots as being a switch in style. Up next for Caroline is American Vania King, a doubles star. I am a fan of Vania, but honestly I don’t see how she gets by Caroline. I’d love for Vania to surprise me.
