Congratulations to the American mixed doubles team of Melanie Oudin and Jack Sock on their title at the 2011 US Open. They defeated doubles star Gisela Dulko and Eduardo Schwank, 7-6 (4) 4-6 10-8. The last set is not 10 games to 8. In the mixed doubles draw, if they split the first two sets they play a super tie-break. They play a tie-break to decide the final set, but the unlike a regular tie-break, where it is first to 7, winning by at least 2 points, the super tie-break is first to 10, also winning by 2.
I have been a fan of Oudin’s since she made a Cinderella run to the quarterfinals in singles at the 2009 US Open. Since then, she has struggled to reach the same heights. She has tons of skill, but she is small and lacks a big weapon that can get her some easy points against the best women players. I am very thrilled to see her win her first Major title. Maybe this can start a great career in doubles, where she can use her skills and not worry as much about huge power. After all, she’s only 19. She can still have a lot of success in the coming years. The 18-year old Jack Sock is a star in the making. He ran into Andy Roddick playing well in the singles draw this year. But make no mistake, Sock has all of the tools to evolve into a great champion.
