Can Samantha Stosur Defeat Serena Williams In The 2011 US Open Final?

UPDATE POST ON SAMANTHA’S WIN: YES SHE CAN! SAMANTHA STOSUR UPSETS SERENA WILLIAMS

After Samantha Stosur lost the 2010 Roland Garros final, a match she was favored to win at the time, to Francesca Schiavone she wondered if she would ever get another chance to win a Major singles title. She’s a great player, but has not been the kind that routinely finds herself in multiple Major finals, a la Serena Williams or Kim Clijsters. Roland Garros 2010 was Samantha’s first Major singles final. With her 6-3 2-6 6-2 victory over Angelique Kerber in the 2011 US Open semifinals, Samantha gets a second chance at Grand Slam glory.

I am a fan of Samantha and certainly will watch and root for her. But we all know who is going to be standing across the net staring her down. Serena. This is going to be a very difficult task for Samantha. The key is her serve. She must hold serve and put pressure on Serena with her own power. Serena is cruising now, having easily beaten Caroline Wozniack 6-1 6-4, because opponents have problems handling her serve and can’t hold their own serve. As you might expect, Serena holds an edge on Samantha 4-2, with a third win for Stosur not counting as a head to head match because it was a walkover.

I really hope Samantha wins. Serena will be fine whether she wins or loses. Her place in history is secure. But if Samantha wins, it would change her life. Just ask Li Na.

    • Samantha must believe she can win. It’s sports. You never know. Even if she loses in straight sets, I hope she plays well.
