Korean TV Show “Birdie Buddy” Inspired By Signature Moment In Se Ri Pak’s Career

Se Ri Pak, 1998 US Women's Open

In what remains to this day the signature moment in Se Ri Pak’s career, the Hall of Famer, who had already won a Major in her 1998 rookie season at the McDonald’s LPGA Championship (now sponsored by Wegmans), was in an 18 hole Monday playoff with Jenny Chuasiriporn at the US Women’s Open when she hit into the water hazard off the 18th tee . In danger of losing the championship, she removed shoes and socks and hit her next shot while standing in the water. She managed to save bogey and remain tied after 18 holes of the Monday playoff to force sudden death, which she won with a tremendous birdie putt from nearly 20 feet on the second hole. It was a victory named by the Korea Times as the 3rd most acclaimed moment in 60 years of South Korean sports history: Top 10 Most Acclaimed Moments In 60 Years

They even have a statue commemorating the shot.

So famous is the shot, that the Korean show “Birdie Buddy” decided to base a scene on Se Ri’s shot. The funniest part to me is when the actress is standing in the water and they superimpose Se Ri’s face over the actress!
