Shiho Oyama won her 12th career JLPGA victory by outdueling Paula Creamer in a playoff to win the 2011 JLPGA Masters GC Ladies. Shiho has fought through injury issues, having not won an event since the 2008 Masters GC Ladies. On this day she had to withstand a fierce 7-under charge by Paula. The Pink Panther stormed out of the gate birdying 4, 6, 7 and 9 to sit at 4-under at the turn. The previous two days Paula stumbled after the turn, but not this time. She had a clean bogey free final round, adding 3 more birdies on the backside.
With Paula putting on the heat, Oyama rose to the challenge. Shiho had a 6 birdie, 1 bogey 5-under 67 to equal Paula at 7-under overall. Especially clutch was a 15 meter birdie on 18 to force the playoff. Paula is widely known to be a great champion with a winner’s heart. So is Shiho. She had 11 JLPGA wins under her belt before this event. However, her lack of a win in 3 years might have suggested Paula had the mental advantage. But on the third hole of the playoff, Shiho shook off the winless drought with a birdie to reach the pinnacle again.
