Momoko Ueda, Sakura Yokomine Blister Course In Second Round Of 2011 Mizuno Classic, Sit At 1 And 2 Atop Leaderboard

Momoko Ueda

Momoko Ueda torched the course in the second round of the 2011 Mizuno Classic. Showing the form that made her the 2007 champion of this event, Momoko shot an 8-under 64, highlighted by an incredible 6-under on the back side coming in. Although Mizuno is co-sponsored by the LPGA and JLPGA, Momoko is surprisingly the only Japanese winner of this event since 1998 when it was won by Hiromi Kobayashi. Contrast that to the LPGA event in South Korea that has been won by Koreans 7 out of 10 times. Momoko has an excellent chance, with a 3-shot lead going into the final round, to put Japan back in the winner’s circle at Mizuno.

Sakura Yokomine

Not to be outdone was my favorite JLPGA player, Sakura Yokomine. Sakura broke the course record (previously held by Stacy Lewis, Lorena Ochoa and Akane Iijima) with a scorching 9-under par 63. Going into the 2011 Mizuno Classic I was thinking about whether a win by Chie Arimura might convince her to come to America. Now, I am rooting for Sakura to catch and pass Momoko (and hold off everybody else) for a win in the final round. Her comments after the round make me think the 18-time winner on the JLPGA could come to the States.

I thought the LPGA was something I could not achieve. I thought it was something very far away, but after today, when I realized that I was leading the tournament with nine birdies, I thought differently. If I win, I would like to think about playing on the U.S. LPGA Tour. – Sakura Yokomine

  2. Wow… this is great. One cannsee why the women’s game is more popular in Asia than it is in the US just by looking at these photos. They resonate an energy, creativity & fun that’s lacking at stateside events. IMHO. (*-*)/”

    • There is truly an energy and electricity the fans in Asia have with their ladies golf events. There is an energetic group of LPGA players coming through now. We just have to try to find a way to get younger, non-traditional golf fans to check out the LPGA…how to do that is trick…:)
