Lexi Thompson Makes More History, Winning 2011 Omega Dubai Ladies Masters

Lexi Thompson, 2011 Omega Dubai Ladies Masters Winner

Lexi Thompson continues to show why she is the next big thing in women’s golf, maybe the next big thing in golf, period. Entering the last round of the 2011 Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, she held a slim 1-shot lead over veteran Sophie Gustafson. By round’s end, Lexi showed she has the killer instinct and nerves to close with a flourish, firing a final round 67 to finish at 15-under overall, 4 shots north of Lee-Anne Pace and 5 shots ahead of Sophie Gustafson. The win makes her the 2nd youngest winner on the Ladies European Tour. Before I go any further, let me add that I have read many articles that have headlines calling Lexi the “youngest professional winner” on the LET. Nothing wrong with that. It’s true. But many of those articles…not all, but more than I think is fair…have left out mentioning Amy Yang, a current rising star, who was younger than Lexi when she won the 2006 ANZ Ladies Masters as an amateur. I only nitpick because I know some people might assume Lexi is the youngest winner on both the LPGA and LET, without qualifying it with the professional distinction.

That said, Lexi will enter her rookie season on the LPGA in 2012 as the overwhelming favorite to win Rookie of the Year. She is such a talent, so special, that I would not be surprised at anything she accomplishes. However, I believe that 2011 US Women’s Open champion So Yeon Ryu, a rookie on the LPGA next year but an established star on the KLPGA, will give Lexi and everybody else a run for their money. But what if I’m wrong? What if Lexi is more than just the next big thing? What if she is the best American player on tour? Could she win 4 or 5 events playing a full schedule in 2012? Is she the potential challenger to Yani Tseng? One thing is for sure, if the answer is yes to even one of those questions, it would be a shot in the arm to LPGA golf in America. I love the globalization of the LPGA. As a lifetime tennis fan, a true global tour appeals to me. Still, I also think the LPGA…and the WTA or ATP…benefit by at least having a serious American challenger for the #1 world ranking. Cristie Kerr held the #1 spot briefly in 2010 but couldn’t hold it as the Year of Yani overwhelmed all competitors. Mix in the appeal of Lexi being a rising teen player…we always like the “new” star…and she is a marketing dream for American golf. Can’t wait to see how Lexi’s 2012 goes. Let me close by saying that I kind of hate putting all of that on Lexi’s shoulders. We’ve seen that done before, recently with Michelle Wie. First and foremost, I hope Lexi has an injury-free, successful campaign in 2012, whether she wins anything or not. It’s tough enough to be a full time professional athlete, so I hope she doesn’t get weighed down with being the latest player to be labelled the “savior” of the LPGA in America. It’s a tough spot. I don’t want to put that on Lexi, but her play continues to beg that question.
