Lydia Ko, 14, Becomes Youngest Player To Win A Professional Golf Tournament

Lydia Ko, 2012 Women's New South Wales Open winner

If you follow women’s golf and haven’t heard of the talented amateur Lydia Ko, then start paying attention. The 14-year old phenom became the youngest winner of a professional women’s tournament at the 2012 Bing Lee/Samsung New South Wales Women’s Open at 14-under. And before anyone dismisses this win as some obscure minor event, keep in mind she beat seasoned veterans including Katherine Hull, Becky Morgan, Lindsey Wright, Glwadys Nocera, Melissa Reid and Laura Davies. This young lady is no fluke. She finished 2nd at this event in 2011 to Caroline Hedwall. She three-putted the final hole, missing a 3-footer, to hand that title away or she would have set this record as a 13 year old. We will see Ko in the LPGA season opening ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open. After all the drama around Alexis Thompson I have to think the last thing Michael Whan wants to see is Lydia win that event and try to petition for membership.
