Christel Boeljon Wins 2012 Gold Coast RACV Australian Ladies Masters

Christel Boeljon

Christel Boeljon proved it’s never over until it’s over, securing her first solo lead of the 2012 Gold Coast RACV Australian Ladies Masters when it counted the most, the final hole. Her thrilling win came at the expense of overnight leader So Yeon Ryu, who let a three shot advantage evaporate with even par play on a day when birdies were festooning the top 20. As a result, it looked like there would be a possibility of a four woman playoff when Boeljon and Ryu teed off on the 18th hole in regulation. The duo were sitting at 20-under, but so were Diana Luna and Ha Neul Kim, already in the clubhouse.

So Yeon Ryu

Ryu pulled her second shot on the par 5 18th into the left greenside bunker. Her shot out of the sand ended up about 25 feet past the hole, setting up a difficult birdie attempt. Meanwhile, Boeljon knocked a 36 foot eagle attempt from the fringe to about 4 feet. She nailed the birdie while Ryu could only manage par, giving the Dutch player her 2nd LET win. It was a bitter pill to swallow for Ryu, who seemed to have control in this event. The 2011 US Women’s Open winner regretted not being able to close the show.

“I really wanted to win the game and it was like, not rushed, but not calm enough in my mind. If I practise a lot and enough, then I can get more comfortable in my mind. My mind is too busy, I need to think simple.” – So Yeon Ryu
