Jessica Korda Leads 2012 ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open After 3rd Round

Jessica Korda

Like father, like daughter? Jessica Korda, daughter of 1998 Australian Open tennis champion and former world #2 Petr Korda, is one round away from adding her own national championship of Australia title to the Korda family trophy case. But for Jessica, it would be a golf championship, if she can hang on to win the 2012 ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open. How tough is Royal Melbourne playing? Jessica shot an even par 73 and moved from 3rd into 1st! She did have some birdie chances, like a miss on 18, but if the conditions on Sunday continue to be challenging, no lead is safe (her lead is only 1 shot anyway over a trio in second place). It wouldn’t be a surprise if an even par or possibly 1-over par score moved people up the leaderboard on Sunday as well.

Hee Kyung Seo

As much as I’d like to see Jessica close things out, the players right behind her include two of my favorites, Hee Kyung Seo and So Yeon Ryu. Ryu really let things slip away. 7-under after the 8th hole, she ended the round at 3-under, including a bogey at 18 after a nice dig out of the sand gave her a chance to possibly salvage par. On the other hand, Hee Kyung Seo dropped a brilliant birdie putt in from what seemed like another zip code (ok, not really), with the ball picking up speed at the hole. No worries about going 10 feet past the hole as Hee Kyung dropped it dead center. By the way leaders, don’t look in your rear view mirror. Yani is lurking. Can the superstar from Taiwan chase down the players ahead of her and win yet again?

  1. Pingback: 2012 Australian Women's Open - Page 3 - LPGA Tour Forum

  2. A score of par 73 to about 76 seems like a decent round on that course. I have to admire what Jessica Korda is doing. Whether she ends up on top or not, this is a great performance by a rookie. Lexi is having another good event, but has not produced the week Korda has. Of course 14 year old Su-Hyun Oh made the cut and again has played well. Truly amazing!

    • And 14 year old Lydia Ko in the top 20…maybe just an even par final round could slip her into the top 10…we’ll see…

  3. Lydia won in New South Wales correct? Amazing to see Jessica come out of the gate with a win!! Truly impressive. After slipping some in the middle of the last round , she really dug deep!

    • Yes…it was impressive…but I have to admit…Hee Kyung Seo and So Yeon Ryu are two of my top favorites…so this one stung a little…even though I am very happy for Jessica 🙂

  4. It’s hard when some of your favorites are in contention and they don’t make it. I mean I could make a case for all six players in the playoff deserving a win. I’ve gotten friendly with Brittany here on the internet so she is one of my favorites. I admire the courage that Stacy Lewis has shown in her life with all the back problems she has had. I even gave her the nickname “Nails” because of how tough she is. Julieta is also another who is very well liked on tour. I guess I’m saying I would applaud and smile if any of the six won. I was rooting most for Brittany in the play-off because I know her. THat first putt of hers went in and then out. In the end, I guess Jessica was meant to win. And she moved up over 200 spots on the Rolex rankings!
