Kim Clijsters Withdraws From 2012 BNP Paribas Open At Indian Wells With Ankle Injury

More troubling news for fans of Kim Clijsters. She has announced that she will not play at Indian Wells due to a left ankle injury. I don’t know if this has anything to do with the twisted ankle she suffered against Li Na at the Australian Open. She did play two more three set matches after that so I doubt it. 2011 was more or less lost after the Australian Open due to injury. I am very worried that 2012 might follow the same pattern. Even if she does manage to play some big events, the rise of players like Victoria Azarenka and Petra Kvitova, not to mention Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki who are always a threat when healthy, will make coming into events without a lot of matches very tough. I hope first and foremost for Kim to be healthy in life. But from a fan standpoint, I worry that she is already one foot out the door to retirement.
