Samantha Stosur, Marion Bartoli Advance In First Round Of 2012 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

Samantha Stosur

2011 US Open champion Samantha Stosur stayed perfect in her head-to-head with Peng Shuai, winning 6-2 6-2 in 59 minutes to open her campaign at the 2012 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Things are potentially much more difficult in the next round as Samantha faces Julie Goerges, the defending champion who defeated Stosur in the semifinals last year before knocking of then-#1 ranked Caroline Wozniacki in the final.

Marion Bartoli

Also advancing was 7-time tour winner Marion Bartoli, who defeated Iveta Benesova 6-3 6-2. Marion is one of my favorites, but it will be tough for her to win this events. She’s never won a WTA clay singles title, and has reached only two finals. However, one was last year in Stasbourg (the other was 2007 Prague). More than that, this is a really strong field. All that said, Marion did make a semifinal run on clay at Roland Garros in 2011, losing to Francesca Schiavone so it’s not impossible for her to make a run in Stuttgart.
