After the way Petra Kvitova played in 2011, winning Wimbledon, the WTA Tour Championship and capturing the 2011 WTA Player of the Year, I honestly never thought it would be August before she won her first title of 2012. However, that’s exactly what has happened as Petra defeated Li Na 7-5 2-6 6-3 to win the 2012 Rogers Cup. It was a rollercoaster final, with an hour-plus first set won by Petra, a whip quick second set won by Li in which the Chinese star won the first four games at love and a recharged Kvitova closing the show in the third set.
Petra and Li Na are two of my favorite players, but two of the most frustrating to follow because you never know what version of them will show up for a match. This is especially true of Petra. Call me crazy, but I actually think Kvitova has the tools to be competitive with Serena Williams at her best in a way that Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova currently have not shown themselves to be. The skill that Petra showed winning Wimbledon last year, if she could consistently maintain that level, is good enough to be #1. If she could consistently maintain that level—yep, that’s the whole issue.
