It was a good day for Petra Kvitova at the 2012 New Haven Open at Yale. She won her quartefinal match with Lucie Safarova 3 and 3 while also picking up her trophy as the winner of the 2012 US Open Series. The US Open Series is a series of hard court events over the summer leading into the US Open. This will allow Petra to pick up the highest bonus money offered from the US Open Series depending on how she finishes at the 2012 US Open. Should she win it, she would pick up a 1 million dollar bonus in addition to the winner’s 1.9 million dollar share. That would give her a record one-event prize money payout for a female athlete at 2.9 million dollars. The current record for a one-event prize money payout for women’s sports is 2.2 million dollars, twice done by Kim Clijsters in 2005 and 2010. But that’s the next tournament. For this event, I’d really like to see Caroline Wozniacki, who easily handled Dominika Cibulkova 2 and 1, win her next match and face Petra in the final. As for the US Open series, here are a few  (but not all) of the winners from the women’s side of the US Open Series. The New Haven Open is also part of the US Open Series, but nobody can catch Petra Kvitova for first place or Li Na for second place.
