Caroline Wozniacki Ousted In First Round Of 2012 US Open As Most Of The Top Women Seeds Advance Easily

Top seeds Agnieszka Radwanska, Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber all took the court in first round action on Tuesday at the 2012 US Open. None of them was challenged even slightly. All three lost only 2 games apiece en route to easy blowout victories. Unfortunately for Caroline Wozniacki fans like myself the former world #1 was bounced out in the first round of a Major for the second consecutive time, following her early exit at Wimbledon. This is following a 3rd round departure at Roland Garros. I know this time Caroline’s knee was a bit gimpy. However, a decline is happening injury or not. Should Marion Bartoli win her second round match, Wozniacki will fall out of the top 10. She was #1 at the beginning of the year. This is a precipitous fall. And I think it’s more than just being distracted by her relationship with Rory McIlroy. After all, he managed to win a Major recently. More than that, tennis fans have seen this is recent years. Dinara Safina and Jelena Jankovic, like Caroline #1 players without a Major win, really slipped quickly from their best days. Even Ana Ivanovic, who does have a Major, plummeted in the rankings before bouncing back recently. Only the future knows which path Caroline will take. I hope it’s more like Ivanovic than Safina. Speaking of Ana, it’s early on yet, but a comfortable 3 and 2 win on day one is a nice start for one of my favorite players (although truth to be told, I probably have 2 dozen players I could call “one of my favorites”).
