Ana Ivanovic Reaches Quarterfinals Of 2012 US Open, To Face Serena Williams

Let’s start with the good news for Ana Ivanovic. By defeating Tsvetana Pironkova 6-0 6-4 at the 2012 US Open, she reaches her first US Open quarterfinal. By doing so, she has now reached at least the quarterfinals of all 4 Majors. The bad news is that up next is Serena Williams, who vaporized Andrea Hlavackova 6-0 6-0. Ana lost to Serena at the US Open last year, 6-3 6-4, in the round of 16. But I clearly remember that match. Off the ground, she was hitting well with Serena. It was a really windy day. I even remember Ana holding down her tennis dress between points and fighting her hair blowing in her face. More importantly, her service toss, which is shaky even in perfect conditions, was being blown all over the place in the wind. She was often reaching and bending to the side to catch up with her toss, really affecting her service game. If she can serve better, I can see Ana being competitive with Serena. Am I predicting an upset? No. But I am saying it’s not impossible, either. The odds are heavily with Serena, but if Ana can serve well and get a groove on her forehand, strange things happen in sports. Just ask Samantha Stosur about that last year when everybody counted her out against Serena in the final.

    • Sorry, work was crazy this week…didn’t have time to blog for about 3 days or check messages…since I missed posting about this match (or any matches for a few days)…I will just say that I am happy Ana improved on her points from last year’s US Open. I don’t know what her goals are, but I know that I’d like to see her maybe up to 8 or 9 in the rankings by the 2013 Australian Open. 🙂
