One More Chance For Victoria Azarenka To Defend #1 Ranking In 2012 Versus Serena Williams

No matter what happens in the 2012 US Open women’s singles final, Victoria Azarenka will still be the #1 ranked player in the world at the conclusion. However, if she loses…especially if Serena blows her off the court…her ranking will be meaningless. And she and others who support the computer rankings can argue whatever they want, nobody will believe anybody but Serena is the real #1. To be honest, most people think Serena is the real #1 right now. However, if Vika can pull the upset…and it would be an upset…she can legitimately claim the top spot. She would have 2 Majors in 2012 and the most consistent season. I think whenever Serena wins, it boosts the WTA tour and tennis in general in America. In this case though, I think a Vika win is more important. If you love the game, you hate to see what happened when Caroline Wozniacki, Dinara Safina and Jelena Jankovic were #1; controversy about the legitimacy of how tennis ranks its players. What worries me is that Vika (and Masha, too) looked beaten mentally by Serena this year. Does Vika really, down deep, believe she can win? Will she go out there like Samantha Stosur did last year and fight? We shall soon see. By the way, since I missed a few days of blogging with other pressing business obligations, the following media is mostly from the semifinals with some other things mixed in.

Singles – Semifinals
(1) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) d. (3) Maria Sharapova (RUS) 36 62 64
(4) Serena Williams (USA) d. (10) Sara Errani (ITA) 61 62
