Wow! What a day 2 at the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships. In a match-up of contrasting styles, Maria Sharapova rallied from a set and break down to outlast Agnieszka Radwanska 5-7 7-5 7-5. It was three hour plus match but worth it for Masha as she qualifies for the semifinals regardless of what happens in her third round robin match. I would never tell a player to not go out and give an effort to win, but I would say that maybe if she’s in the same situation as she was against Aga, down a set and a break, it might not be worth it to try to extend to 3 sets. Gotta think big picture. Conserve energy for the semis when she will truly need it.
If Masha was pushed close to defeat, #1 ranked Victoria Azarenka tiptoed right along it’s edge. The 2011 finalist had to fight off double match point against her in the second set before coming back to win the day’s second 3 hour plus match 6-7 (11) 7-6 (2) 6-4 over Angelique Kerber. All the players talk about how the Tour Championships afford no easy opponents, but I doubt Vika expected to be taken to the wood like this against Kerber, to whom she’s never lost. But that’s why they play the game. Anything can happen.
Also, let me just throw in here that Petra Kvitova pulled out with a viral illness. 2012 was not the year I expected from Kvitova. I thought she’d win at least 1 Major. She has all the talent to challenge anybody. Anybody. Let’s see if she puts it all together in 2013.
