Stacy Lewis Wins 2012 Mizuno Classic; Closing In On Player Of The Year

PIG-SOOOOEEEEY! It was another brilliant day for Stacy Lewis, former NCAA Division I Champion at the University of Arkansas and maybe this year the Player of the Year on the LPGA Tour. For POY, it’s almost a lock. With the Mizuno win, she is 58 points ahead of Inbee Park, who has the money list secured. There are two LPGA events left, each worth 30 points to the winner, meaning that Inbee would have to win both events to usurp Stacy’s place atop the POY list. I love Inbee, she’s a great player.  But winning back to back weeks on tour is tough. However, that said, Suzann Pettersen just won in Korea and Taiwan in back to back events. So don’t pop the champagne yet, Stacy. All of that will work itself out, but for now what a comeback for Stacy. Seven shots down to start the day, but clawed back with a 10 birdie, 2 bogey round, including birdying the final 3 holes, to eclipse overnight leader Bo-Mee Lee. I’ll be honest, I was rooting for Bo-Mee to win. A win here might have changed her career, giving her an automatic LPGA exemption. However, you have to finish what you start, and she didn’t. It’s too bad, but it doesn’t take away from a marvelous performance from Stacy. It’s her fourth victory of the season and might just have given her the lead she needs to become the first American to win LPGA Player of the Year since Beth Daniel in 1994.

Here’s a nice “in the bag” Stacy Lewis feature:

    • I don’t want to say she has it locked up…but she does…of course, you know I love the international players, but it will be good for the LPGA to get an American Player of the Year. 🙂
