Petra Kvitova Starts 2013 At The Brisbane International; Can She Challenge For #1 In 2013?

At the beginning of the 2012 WTA season, I had such high hopes for Petra Kvitova. She was coming off earning WTA Player of the Year for 2011, with a Wimbledon and Tour Championship crowns to highlight her year. While 2012 wasn’t a bad year for Petra, after all she did win Montreal and New Haven not to mention ending the year as part of the Czech Republic’s back to back Fed Cup winning squad. However, it was a bit of a letdown from the 6 win, POY  performance she had in 2011. We know Serena Williams was the best of 2012, but Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwanska all had better years than Petra as well. Probably Angelique Kerber, too. To trail those great players is nothing to feel badly about. The thing is, I feel that when Kvitova brings her A game, when everything is working, she is the player to challenge…legitimately challenge…Serena. The problem is that one never knows what Petra will show up from match to match. If she can get her fitness a little sharper and truly believe she can do it, she can be #1 in 2013 regardless of whomever else is challenging. I hope we get to see the fruition in 2013 of what she hinted at with her play in 2011. In the meantime, Kvitova opens her year at the Brisbane International. Prior to tournament play, Petra was able to spend some time Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.
