Maria Sharapova, Agnieszka Radwanska Fall To Familiar Foes Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka In Semifinals Of 2013 Qatar Total Open

In two scenarios that keep repeating, Maria Sharapova fell to Serena Williams while Agnieszka Radwanska was dispatched by Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals of the 2013 Qatar Total Open (Doha). It was the 7th straight win for Vika over Aga. Even more shockingly, Masha has been defeated 10 straight times by Serena. Don’t get me wrong, Williams is better than Sharapova (as Azarenka is better than Radwanska), but Masha is good enough that she shouldn’t be beaten this many times in a row by anybody. You’d figure she’d have a day where things went her way. If players like Ekaterina Makarova, Angelique Kerber and Sloane Stephens could have a good day against Serena, then Masha should have at least a 1 in 10 chance of victory also. But it seems to be getting, or already is, a mental thing with Masha. The matches are not even competitive anymore and that’s really  a shame. Sharapova is a great champion, one of the best ever. As good as Serena is for the game, a great rivalry would be even better. A more balanced rivalry between Williams and Masha would be best.

So it looks like it’s up to Victoria Azarenka to step up and challenge Serena, if she can. Vika was up 5-3 in the final set of last year’s US Open final against Williams and serving for the match. Azarenka could not close the show. In fact, up to now Serena has been thrashing Vika with the same lopsided victory total as Masha. Williams, who will take over #1 again in the rankings Monday, at 31 the oldest player to be ranked #1 since the computer rankings began, has beaten Vika 9 straight times. It might ultimatley turn out that Azarenka joins Masha in reaching double digit straight losses to Serena, but at least Vika has been more competitive. I think she has a chance. Do I favor her to win? No. However, an Azarenka upset win would not shock me.
