Jiyai Shin Wins 2013 ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open

I have to admit that going into the final round of the 2013 ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open, I was rooting for The Kid. And by the The Kid, I mean teen phenom Lydia Ko. The storyline was just so intriguing. However, there is another storyline that emerged that picks up on something a lot of fans of women’s golf thought we might see a few years ago. Jiyai Shin emerged victorious here at the Women’s Australian Open, holding off a big charge from Yani Tseng. It is the 37th global win for Shin. A few years ago, it looked like Shin vs Tseng could become the rivalry that took over women’s golf, but it never happened. Yani exploded into the stratosphere of all-time greatness while Shin, still a good player, didn’t quite keep up. Maybe this is the first indication that 2013 is the year we will see Yani vs Jiyai as the dominant rivalry in women’s golf. I hope so. We’ve had periods of dominance from Annika Sorenstam, Lorena Ochoa and Yani Tseng, but we’ve not had a really great rivalry since Annika and Karrie Webb in the late 90s and beginning of the 2000s. I think rivalries can push sports. So I hope this one gets cooking.

Still, it was difficult to see Lydia Ko get off to a double bogey-bogey start on the first two holes. While she did briefly regain a tie for the lead on the back nine, she never really recovered from that terrible opening. She would be saddled with a 3-over 76 round that ends on a sour note a tournament that showed so much promise. A 3rd place finish in a professional tournament behind Shin and Tseng is something to be very proud of for Lydia. Oh, but what could have been. Let me also add one more thing in conclusion, that I was extremely pleased to see Moriya Jutanugarn finish in 4th place. I am a big fan of the Jutanugarn Sisters (Ariya and Moriya). I will follow their careers with great interest.
