Taylor Thompson is one of a handful of promising up and coming American female tennis players that includes Sloane Stephens, Christina McHale and Madison Keys, among others. However, on Day 4 of the 2013 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells she was given a lesson in experience from former world #1 Ana Ivanovic, 6-1 6-2. The 2008 Indian Wells champion was just too much for the young Thompson. I hate to ever make too much of physical fitness of players, but one big difference between the two players was Ana’s movement. Taylor has all the shots, but her movement would greatly improve through more training. Ana isn’t a Jelena Jankovic (in her prime) or Serena Williams-like mover, but in this match she looked like an Olympic sprinter by comparison. I don’t want to come down hard on a great young American. In fact, despite the lopsided score, you can see the potential in Taylor. I sat watching thinking if her footwork and movement were better, Ana would have a problem on her hands. But not today.

Coming into their Indian Wells showdown, Daniela Hantuchova actually had a 2-1 career advantage over world #2 Victoria Azarenka. And Daniela started the match looking like she was on her way to making it 3-1 as she quickly jumped up on Vika, 4-1 in the first set. However, Vika didn’t reign as #1 nor win back to back Australian Opens by wilting under pressure. After bouncing her racquet of the hard court after falling behind 1-4, Vika blitzed Hantuchova, winning 11 of the next 12 games to dismiss the challenge, 6-4 6-1. What looked like an upset brewing quickly became a routine victory for defending Indian Wells champion Azarenka.
