Sometimes along the way to a tournament win, top seeds have to survive a  surprising challenge from a lower ranked player. So it was on day 5 of the 2013 BNP Paribas Open as many top seeds were made to work a little harder than fans and media might have suspected. On a day when Fabio Fognini was giving Novak Djokovic all he could handle, Carla Suarez Navarro and Sorana Cirstea, two very good players, were taking the measure of the highly seeded Maria Sharapova and Agnieszka Radwanska. It wasn’t the prettiest tennis she ever played, but through the errors Masha was able to get by Suarez Navarro, 7-5 6-3. The scoreline might be straight sets but it was anything but routine. In fact, as I watched during the first set I had that feeling that it might be one of those days where Masha had a clunker. Luckily, for her and her fans, she was able to endure and win on a day where she didn’t have her A game. Similarly, Agnieszka Radwanska was able to outlast the game Sorana Cirstea, 6-7 (3) 6-3 6-4. Cirstea has the talent to one day maybe be a top 10 player. It hasn’t happened yet, but you can see the ability. However, on this day it would be Aga who would be the top 10…top 5, actually…player to win and advance.
