Disappointment In The Desert As Victoria Azarenka and Samantha Stosur Withdraw From 2013 BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells)

The women’s draw at the 2013 BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells took a big hit when both top-seed and defending champion Victoria Azarenka and Samantha Stosur withdrew citing injuries. An MRI showed inflammation and tendinitis in Vika’s right ankle. Understandably, she will rest rather than try to push it. Of course I wish Vika a speedy and full recovery, but the withdrawal is disappointing as her match-up with Caroline Wozniacki might have been a very intriguing and dramatic match. On top of that, Vika had a good chance to become the first women’s back to back champion at Indian Wells since Martina Navratilova in 1990 and 1991. Azarenka is still undefeated in 2013…when she actually plays. She has two walkovers on pull-outs.

It was an especially bad day for the ladies since Samantha Stosur’s withdrawal before her match with Angelique Kerber meant there were no ladies quarters played on this day. Bad news for the fans. Samantha is suffering from a right calf injury. Like Vika, I wish Stosur a speedy and full recovery. She is so professional and seems really sweet. I definitely root for Samantha. OK, I missed the Sharapova and Kirilenko wins a few days ago as my real job is rather hectic at the moment, so I will put some of those pictures and videos in this post. That’s why I like to blog. No rules…just do whatever you want! 🙂
