Yuna Kim (Kim Yeon-A) reclaimed her place atop the world of figure skating with by capturing the ladies title at the 2013 ISU World Figure Skating Championships. This was Yuna’s first appearance since 2011 at the Championships but she showed that she’s still the best. The 2010 Olympic Gold Medalist and 2009 World Champion’s score of 218.31 bested defending champion Carolina Kostner by 20 points. Yuna landed six triples in her free program, including an opening triple lutz-triple toe loop combo. Not bad for a skater who had competed in only 2 events the last 2 years. An ancillary, yet important, benefit of Yuna’s win is that 2 more South Korean skaters will make it to Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics. The win by Yuna also denied Kostner, who actually had a bleeding spell during her performance, a back-to-back World Championship win, which would have been the first since Michelle Kwan (my all-time favorite skater) won in 2000 and 2001.
