Ariya Jutanugarn Wins 2013 Lalla Meryem Cup

The toughest day watching professional women’s golf for me occured earlier this year at the 2013 Honda LPGA Thailand event. I am a big fan of Ariya and Moriya, the Jutanugarn sisters. Ariya stood on the tee of the 72nd hole of the tournament with a 2 shot lead. She was denied an age-exemption by the LPGA and thus could not go to Q-school to qualify for the tour. But with a sponsor’s exemption into Honda, she was poised to emphatically prove she belonged. She had captured the attention of her native Thailand, thrilling them with a hole in one earlier in the round. And then it all went wrong. The golf gods were not on her side that day as she would triple bogey the final hole to lose by 1 shot and leave the hometown crowd, and me watching and pulling for her, despondent and crestfallen. Of course, none of us felt those emotions more than Ariya, who sought comfort in the arms of her sister, Moriya.

Like In-Kyung Kim following her final hole letdown at the 2012 Kraft Nabisco Championship, Ariya shed her tears and then gathered herself and soon put her ubiquitous smile back on her face. She answered all the questions and dealt with what should have been her greatest professional moment ever, a 2nd place finish in an LPGA event, becoming her most disappointing. She bounced back on another exemption to finish 4th at the HSBC Women’s Champions. In addition to the 2 LPGA top 5s, she also finished runner-up at the Ladies European Tour (LET) Volvik RACV Ladies Masters. Ever since watching Jenny Chuasiriporn battle valiantly against Se Ri Pak at the 1998 US Women’s Open, I have been waiting for that special Thai talent who could challenge the best in the world and be among the top 10 women’s players in the world. She has a long way to get to that level, but maybe Ariya Jutanugarn is the chosen one.

With 4 rounds in the 60s, including 3 straight 67s to close the tournament, Ariya won the 2013 Lalla Meyrem Cup on the LET. The Ladies European Tour, unlike the LPGA, allowed Ariya to qualify for their circuit. The choice is paying off as she is off to a flying start. Not only does she appear likely to cruise to Rookie of the Year honors, she also seems to have a shot at the overall Order of Merit. There’s a lot of golf left to be played, so I don’t want to get ahead of things too much. Still, she clearly is special. I can’t wait to see what she will accomplish next.

  1. Much the way Lydia Ko’s talent is there for all to see almost every time she tees it up, Ariya seems to do pretty much the same thing. She has so much talent and I think the sky is the limit for her.

  2. Sorry I didn’t respond sooner guys…I agree Robert. Thanks, Mr. G. I know I am getting WAAAAAAAAAY ahead of things but in my golf fantasy land, I would like to see both Ariya and Moriya win on the LPGA tour. I know Charlotta Sorenstam does have one win on tour…and her sister, Annika…I’ve heard she won a tournament or two in her day…LOL! Outside of the great Annika and her sister, Charlotta, I am not as versed in LPGA history to know if other sisters have wins as well. Danielle Ammaccapane was great…did Dina ever win?

  3. Blackwelders, Mother and daughter, are pretty good immediate family members to play well. You know me and where I will lead the conversation! Hah! In just a few weeks Morgan Pressel’s younger sister, Madison, will be in the field of the Texas Shootout with her sister. This was not an invite. Madison had to play well and qualify for it!!
