Laura Robson built on her first round win at the 2013 Mutua Madrid Open with a huge 2nd round upset of 4th seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-3 6-1. Not only does this mark the first top 5 victory of Laura’s young career, but she did so by showing the amazing potential that has some tennis fans, including myself, looking at her as a future champion in the sport. From 3-3 in the 1st set, Robson won 9 of the final 10 games to completely overwhelm Aga, something that is very difficult to do. I would love to see Laura go deep into the draw here…well, except that her next opponent will either be Ana Ivanovic or Chanelle Scheepers. If it’s Chanelle, with all respect I will root for Laura. But if it’s Ana…well, I can’t root against Ana in this situation. She’s one of my top favorites.

Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova had to fight from a break down in the 1st set to overcome Alexandra Dulgheru, 7-5 6-2. Masha said she was adjusting to the altitude and conditions. I wouldn’t be too concerned about her form. Remember that she was pushed to 3 sets in 3 straight matches in Stuttgart before unleashing her best tennis of the week in the final against Li Na. And speaking of Li Na, I must take this moment to congratulate up and coming American Madison Keys on her biggest win ever, taking out Li Na in the 1st round. I meant to do a couple of write ups late last night about Madison Keys and Cristie Kerr’s LPGA win but I fell asleep in front of my laptop…the next thing I knew it was 7 AM in the morning! LOL! Anyway, I will include the video recaps of the first and second rounds.
