Maria Sharapova defeated Sloane Stephens 6-2 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2013 Internazionali BNL d’Italia (Rome). Masha’s win sets up a clay court rematch of last year’s Roland Garros final between her and Sara Errani. Sharapova won their match in Paris to complete her career Grand Slam. I do think Sara has a chance if she mixes things up, especially using drop shots more against Masha. Sharapova is obviously still the favorite, but you never know what can happen on clay, especially with the home crowd pulling for Errani. Besides Masha and Sloane, the other match I had my eye on pitted two of my favorites, Jelena Jankovic and Li Na, against each other. JJ pulled out a tight 7-6 (2) 7-5 win. Jelena has been playing better lately. I have to see more before I say she is “back”, but certainly she is heading in the right direction.
