Rolex Rankings 5.20.2013: Jennifer Johnson, Onnarin Sattayabanphot and Yoon Kyung Heo On The Move With Wins

Jennifer Johnson (click to enlarge)

It’s good to be a winner. Jennifer Johnson won on the LPGA. Onnarin Sattayabanphot won on the JLPGA. Yoon Kyung Heo won on the KLPGA. All saw their Rolex Rankings take big jumps. Jennifer went from 78 to 52, a jump of 26 points. Yoon Kyung went from 65 to 51, a 14 point improvement. The biggest move was by Onnarin. Although still out of the top 100 (though I suspect not for much longer) at 130, she rocketed up from 180…vaulting 50 spots. Also, I wanted to congratulate Jennifer on her win. I did posts for Yoon Kyung and Onnarin, but was so swamped Sunday night I didn’t get a chance to do one for JJ. She’s classy and I love what she’s done with the Wounded Warrior project. Jennifer is a very easy player and person for whom to root.

  1. I’m thinking that at the moment if I had to send a golfer out to shoot a low round for me, I might just pick Ariya Jutanugarn. Wondering how the rest of her year will shake out. I definitely want to see her play some in NJ next week (when Morgan is not on the course at the same time.) I assume we will see a lot of Lydia Ko this summer. I love my favorites but I also love to see when players come along to shake up the golf world..!!

    • One thing concerns me about Ariya. We saw that meltdown on the 72nd hole in Thailand. Then at Mobile Bay she had a reasonable putt for 20-under on the 72nd hole that wasn’t even close to going in. Ultimately, Jennifer Johnson got to 21-under, so it wouldn’t have mattered…but at the time, only Pornanong Phatlum was in the clubhouse at 20-under. I think Ariya might have felt the nerves at the end. Hopefully, in time she will hit those final clutch putts at the end…or maybe she will just go crazy low in some future tournament and win by 7, eliminating the need for a knee-knocking putt.

      • I think what we see with Ariya is a player with shere ability. She has no polish and is still learning what it means to be a pro. I mean Lexi, Lydia, Michelle, etc. have all shown such flashes of ability and won. I do think that Ariya gets a bit nervous and might lose concentration and focus. She seems to shoot these rounds on raw ability alone. I’m not sure she knows it’s ok for her to shoot something above a 69. 🙂

She also has not seen most of these courses before. I mean she could just be in a perfect zone right now, but I don’t even think with these finishes, she has even been playing all that well given her age and the other factors I mentioned. The whole thing is kind of fun. I’m a Yankee fan, but it is fun to find out what what Matt Harvey will pitch like when he starts a game for the Mets (as he is doing today.) Of course Harvey is 24 and Ariya is 17. 🙂

      • The other thing I worry about is that some “name” swing coach will “fix” or “modernize” or whatever they want to call it…her swing. I lament Se Ri Pak changing the swing that was winning her multiple Majors…Michelle Wie and her swing changes…Ariya’s swing ain’t broken…leave it alone…but something tells me somebody with swing coach credentials will talk her or her parents eventually into making changes to “improve” her swing. This was mentioned in the myLPGA forum and I completely agree that I worry about that happening.
