Agnieszka Radwanska reached her first quartefinal at Roland Garros, knocking out 2008 champion Ana Ivanovic, 6-2 6-4. It was an impressive win over one of my favorites. Although Ana lost, I am still happy for Radwanska. She seems to fly under the radar a bit, but she’s a great talent. Not big. Not strong. I’d call her quick around the court, although not fast in the Steffi Graf vein of being able to sprint. But Aga finds a way. Maybe she goes unnoticed because she doesn’t have that signature Major win on her resume and has never been ranked #1. She’s the David Ferrer of the women’s tour, living just outside of the big superstars. She will get another test in her next match, squaring off against 2012 Roland Garros finalist Sara Errani. Sara is a tough out on clay and Aga knows it. Win or lose, we know Radwanska gives it all out there.
I’ve been waiting for Angelique Kerber to regain the form that made her so formidable in 2012. It looks like that A game won’t appear at Roland Garros 2013 as she was shown the exit by 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, 4-6 6-4 6-3. Kuznetsova gets the task of trying to upset Serena Williams next. That’s a tall order for sure the way the world #1 is just obliterating all comers lately. Svetlana did defeat Serena en route to the 2009 Roland Garros title, but that was then, this is now. We’ll see if she can turn back the clock and pull off what would be the upset of the tournament.
