Despite the youth uprising infiltrating the world of women’s golf, let’s not yet hand over the keys to the car to the teenage (and recently teenage) sensations just yet. 38-years young Hall of Famer Karrie Webb put on a dazzling display of final round golf to capture the 2013 ShopRite LPGA Classic. I’m not describing her efforts with superlatives simply because she won. Somebody wins every week. While each triumph on tour takes a great effort, not every final round is dazzling. What made Webb’s performance shine so brightly was that the players that ended round 2 on Saturday with the best shots at seizing the trophy on Sunday were being blown astray by the crosswinds on the Bay Course at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club. Overnight leader Shanshan Feng stumbled with a 4-over round. Chie Arimura fell out of contention with a 3-over. Michelle Wie earned her first top 10 of the year. That should be a much needed shot in the arm for her, except that she finished with a less than spectacular 3-over. The player I was probably rooting for the most, Moriya Jutanugarn, had the worst day of them all, a 7-over implosion left all the more smarting with a 2-shot time penalty rubbed like pickle juice in a wound. A 3-under by Karrie on this day was like a 5-under, maybe even better. If you look at who was able to match Webb at 69 on Sunday, you’ll see familiar names Cristie Kerr and Paula Creamer. Not only are all three experienced champions, but all three are US Women’s Open champions. I am not so daft as to suggest that the Bay Course was playing like a USGA set-up. I am merely suggesting that perhaps these three ladies have a history that demonstrates the ability to deal with the heat when course and conditions bite back.

Karrie wasted no time showing she was in it to win it. The par 4 2nd hole was the toughest on the course. Not for Karrie, who walked off that hole’s green with an early birdie to get her victory round going. But that was just an appetizer. The Order of Australia Member struck a hybrid on her 2nd shot to the par 5 3rd hole that came to rest roughly 7 feet from the hole. I don’t have to tell you what happened. Spell it out: E-A-G-L-E! Karrie did give one shot back on 6 with a bogey, but then the professionalism of a veteran kicked in. She didn’t have a birdie from 7 through 17, but she didn’t let herself go backwards with another bogey either. While the bodies were falling all around her, Webb stood tall. A final birdie on 18 was a fitting denouement on her 39th LPGA win. She moves out of a tie with Carol Mann at 38 wins for solo 11th place on the all-time LPGA Tour wins list. To crack into the top 10, she will need another 2 wins to match the legendary Babe Zaharias. I wouldn’t bet against Karrie to get those 2 wins, maybe more.

I must take a moment to turn away from the frivolity and fun of today’s win for Karrie to acknowledge that she was playing with a very heavy heart. Her beloved grandmother was gravely ill, near-death according to Karrie’s parents. Webb almost returned to Australia Thursday. She remained only because her grandmother, Marion Webb, insisted she stay and win one for her. Take heart Ms. Marion Webb, your granddaughter did just that. Not only was that news to lift her spirits, but word from Karrie’s father is that the health scare has taken a turn for the better. Let’s hope things continue to improve.
