When Maria Sharapova opened her semifinal match against Victoria Azarenka at Roland Garros 2013 with a clunker of a service game to fall behind 0-1, I was worried. I understand losing the first game of the match doesn’t mean that much. What worried me was that she would have another start like she did against Jelena Jankovic in the quarterfinals, but this time Vika wouldn’t let her escape like JJ did. Not to worry, Masha pulled it together immediately to run out the set 6-1. Although Vika stormed back to take the second 6-2, my worry for Sharapova was over. And well so, as Masha pulled out the final set 6-4 to punch her ticket to the final. Whew. Ok, now comes the riddle Sharapova hasn’t been able to solve in a long time, Serena Williams. Serena was every bit the world #1 in dismantling Sara Errani 6-0 6-1. Does Masha believe deep down that she can win? I think she can, she keeps her unforced errors down, including the avoidance of service yips. Vika beat Serena this year. Sharapova is playing better than Vika. We will see. Please no rain on Saturday! 🙂
