Chella Choi Leads 2013 Wegmans LPGA Championship; Morgan Pressel, Brittany Lincicome Bounce Back

Chella Choi (click to enlarge)

Chella Choi flirted with winning her first LPGA tournament when she led the 2013 Mobile Bay LPGA Classic after 3 rounds. She looked sensational in posting a 17-under through her first 54 holes. She would play well in the final round, with a 2-under 70 to push to 19-under overall. Ultimately, it was not enough as she finished tied for 4th. Perhaps that was just a preview of coming greatness. After the first round of a soggy 2013 Wegmans LPGA Championship, Chella Choi holds the lead at 5-under. Chella named Hall of Famer Se Ri Pak as the person she most admires in her LPGA profile. Maybe she can do what Se Ri did in 1998, which is make her first LPGA win the LPGA Championship. It was the first of 2 Majors Se Ri would win her rookie year. Still, I have to say what I always say when I write about first round results. There is a lot of golf to play and a loooooooong way to go.

Two American players that I would love to see bounce back this week are Morgan Pressel and Brittany Lincicome. Their recent play has not been indicative of their talent level. To be fair, Morgan did get married and presumably, had other things occupying her focus. Also, she’s been fighting tendinitis. She says she’s fit now, so maybe we will see Morgan rebound the rest of the year. Brittany was fairly frank about her play when interviewed on the telecast. She has a confidence issue. According to Bam-Bam, she is going back to her old swing, freeing herself from all the rigmarole of the technical changes her new swing changes brought. She’s clearing her mind and just hitting it and going to find it. Well, whatever Morgan and Brittany did in round one, they should keep doing for the the next three rounds. Morgan is tied for 2nd with Jiyai Shin at 4-under, while Brittany is a shot back in solo 4th at 3-under. This is a really important week for both of them, not just for their overall games and confidence, but for Solheim Cup points. I’m on record as saying I think Morgan should be a Solheim captain’s pick regardless of where she finishes, based on her 7-2-2 record overall and even better 6-0-1 record the past two years in Solheim Cup play. However, neither player can depend on past reputation with captain Meg Mallon. Winning the 2013 Wegmans LPGA Championship would probably punch a ticket to Solheim for one of them, though.

  2. I guess I’ve been smiling for many hours now, but I was very happy for Morgan with the round she put in. Brittany has not done much this this year so it was nice to see her put up a good score also. If Morgan continues to hit fairways, there is no reason to think she can’t stay in the hunt through Sunday. I was surprised Lydia Ko struggled, but this is the first or second time she played in this. Ariya had her arm in a sling from some joking around earlier in the week. Thanks as usual for all the lovely pics of all the players, Nice job!

    • You’re welcome…definitely think Morgan can keep it going. Just hope all the players in contention can deal with the 36 hole Sunday marathon. If any of them have conditioning or nagging injuries…could be a factor. Really disappointed to hear that Ariya was hurt while engaging in horseplay with her sister. This should be a lesson to each of them that with so much at stake, they need to be careful.
