Whatever happens in the 2013 AEGON International final, we’ll see a player take a great turn in their career. Elena Vesnina, who easily beat Yanina Wickmayer in the semifinals, came into the year having lost her first 6 WTA singles finals. She finally broke through with a win at Hobart 2013. Still, there is something validating and liberating about getting that second title, to not be a one-hit wonder. Just ask LeBron James. On the other hand, to get to 2 titles, you need to win the 1st one. Jamie Hampton, a rising American star, currently has no WTA titles. What she does have this year is a handful of impressive wins, including wins over Agnieszka Radwanska, Caroline Wozniacki, Petra Kvitova, Lucie Safarova (twice) and Yanina Wickmayer. She also pushed 2013 Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka to 3 sets in their 3rd round match-up. What Jamie needs is consistency. Her match against Wozniacki in the AEGON semis should have been easier. Hampton was controlling the first set and should not have lost it, squandering 5 set points. For a few points she looks awesome. Then for a few points…not so awesome. But I’ll say this, she has game and she plays like she’s fearless. Vesnina has the edge in experience and maybe all-around game. However, I say that only because Jamie hasn’t yet shown she can handle the pressure of a WTA level final…because she hasn’t been in one yet until now. If she comes out and plays to level of her talent, she could put her first WTA trophy on her mantle.
