Laura Robson Upsets Maria Kirilenko In First Round Of Wimbledon 2013; Serena Williams Rolls

Much has been made over the years of Tim Henman’s, and now Andy Murray’s, quest to become the first British male to win a Wimbledon singles title since Fred Perry in 1936. At least Andy broke the overall dry spell in Major singles by winning the 2012 US Open. On the ladies side, the drought for British women in singles at the All-England Club hasn’t been nearly as long as the men. Still, it has been since Virginia Wade in 1978 that a British woman has A) won a Wimbledon singles title and B) won any Major singles title. I don’t think that streak will end this year or next year, but 19-year old Laura Robson looks to have the tools…when she’s on…to be a future Major winner. Her weakness is the same as other talented young players like Sloane Stephens. She needs to find consistency. When it’s working, she looks like a world-beater, as evidenced in her dismissal of 10th seed Maria Kirilenko in the first round of Wimbledon 2013. However, I would not be surprised if Laura went out and lost her next match. She shouldn’t. But sometimes up and coming players have to go through some growing pains before they hit a consistent stride. Make no mistake, though. Regardless of what happens going forward at this Wimbledon fortnight, I can easily envision a Wimbledon singles title in Laura’s future.

While Laura Robson might prove to be the future of women’s tennis, Serena Williams is firmly entrenched as the present. She had no problems in her opening round win over Mandy Minella. There was a certain symmetry in Serena’s 6-1 6-3 victory. Williams won 6 of the first 7 games to take the first set. Then Mandy actually won 2 games to start the second set a quick break up at 2-0. Then Serena finished the same way she started, winning 6 of the last 7 games to close out the match. I’d love to see a potential 4th round match between Serena and Laura. There are a lot of players in the way of that happening, but if it does it’ll be the hot ticket in London for the women’s side to have the homegrown up and comer in Laura take on the Queen of the Court in Serena.
