Dominika Cibulkova Wins 2013 Bank of the West Classic

The last time Dominika Cibulkova faced Agnieszka Radwanska in a final (2013 Sydney Apia International) she was obliterated 6-0 6-0 in the first double bagel WTA final in over 6 years. In the final of the 2013 Bank of the West Classic, again facing Aga, it would be a much different story. Playing with renewed confidence and aggression, CIbulkova shook off a first set loss to come back and emerged victorious, 3-6 6-4 6-4. Dominika did a much better job at being patient and setting up points. However, she wasn’t overly cautious. She had to take some chances with Aga. She can’t out-steady Radwanska. She just needed to do a better job at picking her shots. There were a lot of winners and errors from Cibulkova, but in the end it was Radwanska’s nerves that didn’t hold up. Aga insists she wasn’t thinking about her collapse from 3-love up in the Wimbledon semis against Sabine Lisicki, but once again the world #4 took a 3rd set lead only to have it evaporate. This is to take nothing away from Dominika. She showed tremendous heart and grit to overcome one of the WTA’s most difficult players to hit through. Over the years, Cibulkova…when she’s on…has shown the ability to be a giant killer. If she could be a bit more consistent, she could one day hold a Major championship trophy.
