Petra Kvitova’s quest to defend her title at the Rogers Cup looked favorable, with Victoria Azarenka withdrawing and Serena Williams on the other side of the draw. It seemed her path was opening up, as she jumped to a 6-4 5-4 lead over Sorana Cirstea in the quarterfinals. But Sorana would not quit, fighting back to take out the defending champion 4-6 7-5 6-2. Cirstea has upset Caroline Wozniacki, Jelena Jankovic and now Petra Kvitova in succession. Can she make it yet another seeded player beaten as she goes on to face Li Na in the semis?

Li Na shook off a tight first set to down Dominika Cibulkova 7-6 (1) 6-2, maintaining an undefeated record against her Slovakian opponent. Although she hit a lot of winners, Li wasn’t always consistent in this match. She’ll definitely want to tighten things up and not give Cirstea any reason to believe she can pull the upset in the semis. If Li Na is on her game, she should find herself in back to back Roger Cup finals.
